Why does Hemingway involve such characters as the soldier and the girl in the story? What is their function? Explain and justify.

The soldier and the young woman provide a distraction..... a bit of realism. The couple symbolize the young and the unburdened..... the innocence of youth. They are well able to entertain themselves and have no need for anyone else.
