What hint does the story of "Black Dog's" meeting with the "Captain" give you?

The Captain is obvious afraid of Black Dog and uncomfortable in his presence. We hear talk of hanging before Black Dog runs away, and both men are waving their cutlasses (swords). From this scene, we can infer that the Captain is hiding.
