How does the make-up of the jury in 12 Angry Men compare to our American standard of a "jury of your peers"?

I'm not exactly sure how the American jury is assembled today. I imagine it would be a random cross-section of the population. Then lawyers for both sides vet who they don't want. In the play, the jurors were all white and all male.
