why does due process of law require that the prosecution prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt

Our government desires to provide equitable justice for all people which means that their guilt must be proven without any reservations of the people on the jury. Reasonable doubt means that there is just a chance, no matter how small, that the defendant did not do the crime of which he is accused. This is America's attempt to make sure that no one is ever wrongly convicted.
