Battle Bars -- The Edible Argument

You are going to argue about something very important today -- candy bars!

Choose: KitKats or Snickers?

1. Imagine that there are only two brands of candy bars in the world. Your candy is the best value, and it is your job to come up with as many ethical, logical, and emotional reasons why your candy bars are better than the other. Focus on the question, "Why is my candy bar the best value?" and answer using ethos, logos, and pathos.

2. Work to make a list of the top 10 points (with complete sentences) for why your candy bars are the best. Use examples of price, advertising appeal, ease of consumption, appearance, dangers, nutrition facts, feel, smell, and taste to support your topic.

3. Now vote on which three reasons best represent why your respective candy bar is the better value.

4. Then, write a thesis statement that expressed the three reasons your candy bar is the best value.

5. Next, you will craft three short paragraphs of three or more sentences (the paragraphs must be linked with transitional expressions) for each point you have chosen for your side (3 paragraphs total – 1 paragraphs for each of the 3 reasons you chose for your thesis statement).

6. Now assume the position of the other side and identify what you consider to be that side's strongest point about why you have the best value bar. (Kit Kat groups will write a paragraph supporting Snickers and vice versa).

7. You will write one paragraph, linked to the first three, which demonstrates the opposing position and the three reasons they might choose for why their candy is better.

8. Then you will construct one short paragraph to disprove the other side. Kit Kats will challenge Snickers' strongest point and vice versa. The result will be one challenge paragraph linked to the previous four paragraphs.

-A 5 paragraph essay using ethos, logos, and pathos to argue your claim that your candy is the best value. This essay must include:

• Your thesis statement with the top 3 reasons included (For example: “The top three reasons that set KitKats/Snickers apart from other candy bars are and 3 paragraphs explaining your reasoning in detail 1 paragraph outlining 3 opposing points/ reasons for the other candy bar • 1 paragraph disproving those 3 opposing points
