How did Washington behavior change during the siege at Dorchester Heights in Chapter 3?

In Chapter Three, Washington expresses his fear and lack of confiedence to his close friend, Joseph Reed. This is very out of character, but it is important to note that he does not show this fear outwardly.... his troops do not see the change.
