Syme likes his job too much and is vocal about it. He derives his identity from his accomplishments destroying the English language. The party does not tolerate individual thought or identity. Syme is much too enthusiastic and clever for his own good. As Syme babbles on about the latest edition of the Newspeak dictionary, Winston knows that Syme is "a dead man".
