Julia is much younger than Winston. She has no recollection of pre-revolution times nor does she really care. Winston is obsessed with the past. He tries to hang on to painful childhood memories only because they were real feelings. He wants to remember, even feel a time when there was true love, loyalty, deceit, and primal emotion. Winston wants to know the reasons why and how the party really came to power. Julia simply does not care.
