The setting of Airstrip One, formerly London, is a dystopian nightmare. Everything is grey, bland, and falling apart. For Winston there is nothing to look forward to except a few minutes of respite when he secretly writes in his diary. The rest of his life is drudgery within the huge bureaucracy and enforced conformity of the Party.
