Winston Smith still retains the vestiages of human reason and intividual thought. While the rest of the population of Oceania have been turned into drones of the state, or at the very least terrified into compliance, Winston thinks as an individual. He painfully tries to recall a past before the party and Big Brother. He longs for emotions that have all but dissapeared like empathy, loyalty, and love of family.
