One of the themes of this book is the malleable quality of memory. If the party can create reality, then they can change the past. Winston's job is to alter the past. Winston struggles with the concept of memory throughout the book. From his scattered recollections of childhood to his final acceptance that 2 + 2 = 5, Winston finds that memory is dependent on how he perceives the reality of the moment.
