The party can change the past. They simply destroy all record of the past and create a new one. This, in essence, is Winston's job. Winston was forced to memorise this idea: "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past,"is repeated Winston obediently. Once the past is controlled, the party can create any future it wants to: time becomes malleable.
