This only happens in the Prole district. In Book 2 chapter 10 Winston and Julia watch an old Prole woman hanging clothes. Winston thinks she is beautiful because she has had many children in her youth and now takes care of many grandchildren,
Tirelessly the woman marched to and fro, corking and uncorking herself, singing and falling silent, and pegging out more diapers, and more and yet more. He wondered whether she took in washing for a living or was merely the slave of twenty or thirty grandchildren.
