Winston had just been released, and he was in the cafe pondering the war and conversations he'd had with Julia. He felt defeated, he hated the presence of Big Brother, and he was remembering what Julia had told him about controlling your own reality. He thought she was wrong, and he turned his thoughts to the things he believed for himself;
"There were things, your own acts, from which you could not recover. Something was killed in your breast; burnt out, cauterized out." Part 3, Chapter 6, pg. 293
Moments later, the brainwashing takes full effect as the country's victory in war was announced. Big Brother was ironically and quickly something he no longer feared.
