what is the irony in this statement: "none of the three superstates could be definitely conquered even by the other two in combination. they are too evenly matched and their natural defenses are too formidable"?

The irony comes from the fact that Oceania is larger than both of the other super states. Because of this, it is ironic that they cannot seem to overthrow even the smaller of the two (Eastasia).
