What is the rhetorical effect of Winston reminiscing of his mother and sister?

I think the rhetorical meaning of sacrifice and loyalty is explored through Winston's recollections of his mother and sister suffering because of him. Winston remembers the war and the sacrifices his mother made because they had nothing and because of Winston's obstinance. Although these memories are painful, they were real. They held meaning in a world where real feelings are perverted and numbed by the party.
