Why did Winston and his wife Katherine separate?

Winston's wife had no interest in marital relations unless it was for the express purpose of conceiving a child. Winston came to dread their relations because Katharine didn't hide the fact that it pretty much repulsed her. After awhile, no child was conceived and Katharine agreed to quit trying. Thereafter, they separated, although they remained married because divorce was prohibited.
