Why is Winston disappointed in the answers he receives from old man?

Winston is disappointed and frustrated with the old man's answers because they are generalized.... little minute details that are not interesting to Winston because they aren't what he is looking for. Winston wants to know what life was like.... was it worse, or was it better than the life they were living. Unfortunately, that is not the answer he receives.
