Winston a hero?

We would like to consider Winston Smith a hero, but sadly he is not.

To my opinion Winston isn't a hero, certainly not in the sense that he really rescues a lot of people (children and adults, in particular) but he is more a hero to my opinion that he tries and see the party for what it is, and of course it certainly isn't any good, he thinks very much and philosophies a lot, but that certainly does not make his live better, I think he might be considered a hero cause he cares about the people whom he sees around him, and tries to help them as best as he can; consider the fact that his health is not so good and that is just an understatement;he suffers from a varicose ulcer, and I think he also has something painfull in his shoulder, he also at times, certainly in the morning, when he get's up has a 'good' coughing' fit, and still he seems to do a lot in his live, also many people whom he knows are turning towards him if they want something like razorblades for example, (I both deduct this from the book and from the 1956 BBC-adaptation, which isn't really so good an adaptation from the book, but I think it represent a good character-portrait from Winston, anyway) so I think in general the people around him see him also as a nice or easy going guy, of whom they easily think they be able to make good use of, anyway, to my opinion I wish that their were more people like Winston!
