The climax of the story occurs when Sammy quits his job...... his action is meant to impress the girls, and it is an heroic if unsuccessful attempt to do so. The narrator is alluding to just this when he announces "the sad part of the story", meaning that Sammy actions are in vain, and in the end, he has made his own life even more difficult.
