The "sheep" are the customers of the A&P store. In the early pages of “A & P,” Sammy establishes his contempt for conformity and consumerism, insinuating that the people who shop at A & P are “sheep” (597) who can never be roused out of their daily routines. I occassionally feel like one of the "sheep" when I have to shop, and I'm not in the mood.... I go because it's expected.
