I'm not sure if you mean, "Why did David stop believing there was a God?" None-the-less, it seems as if he regained his faith in the chapters final sentence..... the moment he believed he was going to die.

Before I opened the car door, I bowed my head and with peace in my heart, I whispered, “… and deliver me from evil.”
“Amen."
