What happened the day David got caught begging in Chapter Four?

David's mother watched him closesly for the rest of the day while he waited for his beating. She oversaw his chores and simply smiled, as he became more and more afraid. At the end of the night, when he was too exhausted to move, she made him drink ammonia, a process she repeated the next day.
