There is of course irony in Scrooge's speech. Scrooge has been the opposite of Fezziwig's character. Where Fezziwig has been jovial, sharing, and empathetic with his employees; Scrooge has been miserly, miserable, and callous with his employees. Scrooge is reaching back to a place in his mind when he once appreciated people like Fezziwig.
