The the themes of Christmas are presented through the characters themselves. Scrooge's character depicts the selfish rich.... the ignorant, those who choose to look away from the plight of the poor. The Cratchits represent the true spirit of Christmas..... family, togetherness, and worship. Other characters support these same themes. Fred and Fezziwig understand, as do the men collecting for charity...... Marley did not, and hence, his warning to Scrooge, as well as the Spirits' visits, address the need for people to open their lives and change accordingly.
