What were the "more than eighteen hundred brothers" that the spirit referred to?

On one level, this refers to the number of Christmases, which have gone by since the birth of Jesus Christ. On another level, this represents Scrooge's lack of appreciation and even contempt for Christmas. Scrooge never remembers dead family members or appreciates the ones still alive.
