A Doll's House is a modern tragedy in the sense that it tells the story of a woman's liberation in a patriarchal society. Nora Helmer is clearly the weaker person in her relationship with her husband Torvald. She is kind of a trophy wife, her only identity in life being what Torvald expects her to be. She is essentially a doll, hence the title of the story. Nora must separate herself from her husband and his world to find out who she really is. This was written in the late 1800's. Women did not generally split from their husbands to explore self-identity. That would be the "modern" part of this whole story. The tragedy lies in the fact that Nora must live a meagre life alienated by her former life and societal expectations.
