A Christmas tree is in the house symbolizing family love and unity. At the beginning of Act Two, the tree has been stripped and the candles burned out: the stage directions state that the tree looks “bedraggled.” This would represents the state of Nora's relationship with Torvald and foreshadows the end of their relationship. Nora becomes much like the tree.
