Nora's conversation with Anne-Marie foreshadows Nora's eventual abandonment of her family.

Nora and Anne-Marie have a conversation about the children and how the children are about to be impacted by tragedy. Nora is playful, protective and proud of her children however is aware of the impact she may leave on them through not being around. After Torvalds statement which indicates to Nora she is a dishonest mother who is corrupting the children she started to distance herself. After Anne-Marie expresses how the children are used to not having their mother around Nora explains "Yes, but Anne-Marie, I can't be together with them as much as I was." Nora has indicated the potential she is abandoning her role as a mother. Foreshadowing is used throughout to contributing to a melodramatic ending.

Nora is saying that, if her children ever were to be without a mother, Anne would also care for them. However, Nora stops herself from thinking that way and shifts the conversation toward the topic of the ball. The foreshadowing is that of Nora’s children being without a mother. We will learn, as the play goes on, that this is exactly what will happen.
