From the start, Bierce uses foreshadowing to quicken the pace and add tension. When Carter informs his father he intends to join the Union Army..... his father tells him to follow his heart. In addition, he tells him that he is a traitor to his state.
“Well, go, sir, and whatever may occur do what you conceive to be your duty. Virginia, to which you are a traitor, must get on without you. Should we both live to the end of the war, we will speak further of the matter.
From this, we can infer that Carter's relationship with his family will be torn apart in the same way as his country.
