A Lesson Before Dying
in chapter 4, describe the town of Bayonne
population, segregation, ect.
population, segregation, ect.
Much larger than the unnamed “quarter” where most of the novel takes place, Bayonne is mostly Catholic and strictly segregated. Grant drives into the black section of town which is separated from the white section of town. The "quarters" lack the basic amenities that the white side of town has. The "quarters" consisted of rows of cabins associated with designated plantations, isolated from the larger world. The quarter served as a home for slaves in the nineteenth century and the homes of sharecroppers in the twentieth century.
