What does Grant mean when he tells Reverend Ambrose "there's enough room for both us, I can tell you that"?

Reverend Ambrose ambrose is surpised that Grant did not talk about God with Jefferson before Jefferson is put to death. Grant says he hoped Reverend Ambrose would have taken care of that part.
