Tante Lou treats her as an outsider, and she is short with Grant. As a very religious woman with deep beliefs, Tante Lou questions Vivian about her childhood and religious beliefs. Vivian responds that she's Catholic and attends her church regularly. When Tante asks if she'd be willing to give up her religion because Grant is an atheist, Vivian tells her that she would hope that would never happen, but that she would be willing to if she had to. So in essence, Tante treats her like most mothers of that time would treat a prospective newcomer to their family. She holds that place for Grant.
