Why did grant treat the children poorly?

Grant is full of rage to begin with. He wants his pupils to do well in school and surpass white expectations. At the same time he is frustrated when they can't deliver on his expectations. Grant frequently punishes them for small things fearing that they will fail and validate how whites treat them.
