Why Ermengarde spent the greater part of her life in disgrace and in tears?

Ermengarde spent her life in tears and disgrace because she had a difficult time learning, and she was treated as if she were stupid. Sadly, most of Ermengarde's problems were caused by the expectations of others, and the demeaning way in which they spoke to her. The made her nervous, and they made her feel stupid.
