In Chapter Nine, as Salva progressed across the desert, he felt as if nothing changed..... not the heat, not the landscape..... he could see no end. The clump of rocks, covered with dust, and subtly moving was a group of nine men, all dying in the sand. When one of the women traveling with Salva wet their lips, she was admonished by the others for doing so..... the men were doomed, and if she gave up her water, she would be too.
