In Chapter Three, Salva's circumstances improve when he seeks shelter with an old woman. His circumstances reverse when she tells him that she must move on and leave him alone, as she is unable to take him with her. Salva is confused and frightened by this, but that evening his circumstances change once again when he hears voices and recognizes the people as members of the Dinka tribe.
