Salva is not ready for the trip through the desert. It is a difficult journey, and Salva's shoes are worn out, meaning he must walk barefooted in the sand. The sun was unbearably hot, and Salva had thorns in his feet. It is only because of his uncle's encouragement that he makes it through.
