What did Salva's uncle that made the group respect him?

Uncle Jewiir, the uncle of Salva Dut, is a former South Sudanese soldier. That commanded respect right away. This group was pretty vulnerable. He finds them both food and water. Just his appearance, and the fact he had a gun, helped ward off dangerous people.
