Beah had been struggling with isolation, as he'd been traveling alone for more than a month. During that time, he thought too much, got lost in the forest, and attacked by wild pigs. Traveling alone afforded Beah and the others problems of its own, but to be in the company of others, particularly others in the same situation was a blessing. He no longer wished to be alone.
