This is a lot for just this space. The Civil War in Sierra Leone was complicated. The RUF were basically rebels trying to overthrow the government. The reasons why are more complex than this forum space can deal with. The rampant violence was carried out by both sides. Intimidation, fear, and even "ethnic cleansing" are some of the many reasons for this.
