Beah and the other boys become exasperated with the common refrain “It’s not your fault.” They abuse their teachers, medical workers, and other volunteers at the compound when they hear the statement. Still, the workers and volunteers do not take the abuse personally. They know what these boys have been through and are willing to put up with the boys if they can help them pull through. The boys are merely acting out their fears and aggressions, trying to find context in their new surroundings. These are humanitarians and altruistic people who want to give these boys a chance.
