They died. Their body parts exploded. Blood rained down on Ishmael.

All that we know about Ishmael's family is that they have passed away in a village by the rebels who had set it on fire, but he still does mention about them here and there throughout the Chapters. As you read on in the book closer towards Chapter 17, 18 to 21 we learn about how Ishmael is connected to his fathers brother Uncle Tommy by the help of Ester and some other people.
