I think Beah had to get far away from his conflict area and his old life. It didn't have to be the U.S.A but he needed to be in a place where he could not physically get back to the war zone. I think Beah would have gone back if he could have. Beah was brainwashed. His sense of place and identity revolved around him being a child-soldier.
