how did the boys avoid death when the villagers on the coast found them. is be developing a theme? what is it?

The boys walk for several days, then are accosted by armed soldiers. The soldiers bring the boys back to Yele, a village occupied by government soldiers. Both soldiers and civilians live in the village and appear to be having a safe, almost happy life.
