how does ishmael and his friends overcome negative assumptions in villages where they associate them with evil?

They never really do overcome these assumptions. They try their best to explain that they are merely children running away from the war. Still, they are viewed with suspicion, "When we went to the river to wash our faces, mothers would grab their children and run home."
