What is the difference between ishmaels reaction to the injured and dying people he sees in chapter 1 and in chapter 2? What does this tell you about ishamael and his situation ?
In Chapter One, Ishmael describes the atrocities of war as something he could not comprehend. He and his friends couldn't even imagine what the refugees had experienced.
When we get to Chapter Two, this reaction completely changes. He learns first hand what it is to live through a nightmare of mrder, and he is horrified. Ishmael describes the mutilated bodies, the blood, the body parts, and the insects that followed. In his nightmare, he lifts the towel off of a corpses face and sees his own.
The biggest difference between the two chapters is that early on Ishmael is an after the fact observer; by Chapter Two, he is a participant.
