what is the purpose of the name-giving ceremony

Ishmael remembers his grandmother telling him all about his name giving ceremony. His father held him up before the entire village and he would get his name. The ceremony was to include the village as part of Ishmael's new identity. It meant that that a member of the village was owned and cared for by all of the community.
