Why is there a lot of superstition in the novel?

The superstition in the novel directly relates to the traditions and beliefs of the pre-colonial African culture. Juju is a form of witchcraft, the superstitious practices of the medicine man, or acts of magic. Pre-colonial culture was extremely superstitious, relying on magic for everything from the end of sexual repression (the married woman who refused to remove her bra) to keeping away bad luck.
