Swift's article was meant to expose the prejudice against the poor Irish and respond to numerous proposals that had already been published with ideas for solving Ireland's economic problems. Swift was making fun of the previously printed proposals and trying to draw attention to the reality of the problems.... as well as the people affected by them.
